Pineapple fruit is eaten fresh and used to make a homebrew. Pineapple homebrew is made by collecting juice from peeling and slicing fruit in a container and keeping it for a week (T. Warama, p.c.).
Pineapple suckers and crowns are used for planting and will be planted in swamp gardens, backyard gardens, or even small dedicated gardens (T. Warama, p.c.). Pineapples can be planted in any soils around Limol and at any time of year, but the best time to make a garden for them is the dry season. Dogs, deer, pigs, and birds are a threat to unripe and ripe pineapple fruit (T. Warama, p.c.). Harvest season occurs during the dry season, from November through December. Men and women will harvest pineapples and, if they are growing in the family garden, the family will go together to harvest (T. Warama, p.c.). Pineapples are harvested by pulling the fruit off the plant if they are for personal consumption, or are cut from the plant with a knife if they are going to be brought to a market to sell (T. Warama, p.c.). The first harvested pineapple of the season is given to someone. Members of the church will tithe one-tenth of their pineapple harvest to the church. Pineapple fruit store for a week at most and, as a result, are often shared with others (T. Warama, p.c.). |
